Are too many seeds making my canary sick?
Contrary to popular belief, seeds alone are not healthy for your pet canary. Adding pellets as their main food source would be a better alternative. Most commercial seeds found in pet stores are not nutritionally dense. A diet heavy in seeds can result in many health problems such as fatty liver and an overall decrease in life span. Seeds are high in fat and carb content. One option to remedy this is to add vitamin powder to the seed mix, but a better option would be to convert your canary bird to a majority pellet mix. Seventy percent pellets, twenty percent leafy green vegetables such as kale, broccoli, chard, spinach, and dandelion, and ten percent seeds would be a healthy diet. If your canary is going to continue to eat seed, soaked seed would be a better alternative. This is a topic for a separate blog post.
